about

Sandhya Ramesh is a passionate and dedicated Bharatanatyam artiste, trained in the Kalakshetra bani (style). She started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of 11 from her guru, Smt. Chithra Nair. Under her guru’s tutelage, she acquired her Diploma in Bharatanatyam at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra following her Arangetram in 2014. Sandhya is currently in her pre-final year pursuing Computer Science and Engineering at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, but her journey in dance has not once taken a pause. Immediately after her Arangetram, she resumed her training as a Bharatanatyam artiste and aspiring teacher under her guru, for she believes that her Arangetram was only the very beginning of an infinitely long learning process of the art form. Along with Bharatanatyam, Sandhya has also obtained training in Carnatic Music for 8 years. She believes that the understanding of Bharatanatyam and music in relation to each other is immensely powerful and aspires to deliver the same to her students.

Guru

Guru Smt. Chithra Nair, a disciple of Sri. Sheejith Krishna, hails from the prestigious school of Kalakshetra, Chennai. She is the founder of Samarpana Arts Center, Coimbatore, where Sandhya currently continues her practice. Sandhya started training under Smt. Chithra in 2011 when she was pursuing her Diploma in Bharatanatyam at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra. From then, Smt. Chithra has been nurturing, mentoring and moulding Sandhya to become an independent artiste. She has been training Sandhya in Bharatanatyam theory and performance, Nattuvangam, teaching methodologies, dance philosophies and providing her with plentiful opportunities to perform and grow as an artist and teacher for a decade now.

Pranam to Guru Smt. Chithra Nair, forever.
Pranam to Guru Smt. Bagyalakshmi Ganesan for sharing her wisdom in Carnatic Music.

Experience

Over the years, Sandhya has been fortunate to be able to perform in various prestigious stages and temples across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. She has been part of several dance productions like Sankaralahari, Monsoon Anuraga etc., structured and choreographed by her Guru Smt. Chithra Nair. She has also performed for the Navaratri festival of Isha Yoga Center in 2015, the Bhavan’s Dance Festival in 2015 and 2018, Coimbatore Cultural Academy’s Fest in 2016 and 2017, and Kovaiyil Thiruvaiyaru in 2019, along with her Guru and other artists.

Sandhya believes that all of her art is an arpana or samarpana (offering) to God, a belief that was instilled by her Guru who founded the Samarpana Arts Center in Coimbatore. Asserting this belief, she has performed in various temples including the Guruvayoor Temple (Kerala), Sri Ramar Temple (Ramnagar, Coimbatore), Karuppurayan Temple (Vadavalli, Coimbatore) for the Kumbabishekam, Pariyanampetta Temple (Kerala), Sri Siddhi Vinayaka Temple (Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore), to name a few. Apart from these, she has also performed and done Nattuvangam for various functions in gated communities and corporate shows.

Sandhya has not only performed along with her Guru but also assisted her in teaching Bharatanatyam and music classes for beginners and junior students at Samarpana Arts Center. For a brief while, she also taught students of the Coimbatore Cultural Academy, Vadavalli, and Vidya Vanam, Aanakatti.
